Remember my collaboration with photographer Lauren Haslam for her fashion magazine, GUTTER? You can view it on my portfolio here. Combining my illustrations and photomanipulation with her photography, together we created a otherworldly fashion spread. There has been a trend among fashion photographers to have illustrators draw on their photos, but back in summer 2010 (ah, the age of semi-innocence) Lauren and I took it further and blended ink with pixels so seemlessly that one wonders where the photos begin or paintings end. I can’t believe it took me this long to post these Before and After shots! Here is a screenshot of all 4 spreads together, forming the narrative of an opium-intoxicated young lady whose animalistic, pagan, hyperreal hallucinations take her to a sinister but beautiful place.
Spread 1.BEFORE: Lauren’s photography
AFTER: Manipulation and illustration by me

Spread 4:BEFORE
Of the many drawing styles I’ve experimented with, this one seems to capture the most imaginations! I remember back in my second year at St. Martins, two tutors—yes two, not just one!—chastised that very same drawing style. ”It’s pretty, but then what?”—“It’s so gratituous”—“There’s too much going on” Ah, to be old and nearsighted…It’s a good thing I believe in my vision and fight for my right to be wrong, and that I never listen to anyone when they tell me that they don’t like my work.
You have to fight for your right to paint on top of photos, to have foresight with your vision, to collaborate with complete strangers and give everything you have—because you need courage to create beauty and meaning.x
